F.A.Q

When should I start psychotherapy?

We all come across difficulties daily in our lives. Sometimes these difficulties are manageable, while other times they are more persistent and require more energy from us. Suppose you have noticed that the challenges you are experiencing are persistent and make you feel dysfunctional in the demands of your daily life. In that case, it may be a good idea to begin the journey of psychotherapy.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist?

We use the term "psychologist" to describe the person who has successfully completed the basic studies in Psychology at a certified institution that grants him the license to practice the profession of psychologist.

A psychotherapist has received special training in some form of psychotherapy (psychoanalysis, behavioral-cognitive, systemic, etc.) as an additional tool, beyond the basic studies. This training most often includes clinical practice, personal development and supervision. Apart from Psychology, the basic studies of a psychotherapist can be others, such as Psychiatry.

How long does each session last?

Each psychotherapy session lasts 1 hour. It is necessary for this time frame to be observed by both the psychotherapist and the client for the best conduct of the psychotherapy practice.

What is the preferred number and frequency of sessions?

There is no specific answer to this question. Each patient needs a different number of sessions in order to feel that their therapeutic goals have been met. The same applies to the frequency of the sessions. Depending on the needs of the client and always in agreement with the psychotherapist, the sessions may take place weekly, which is the most common, but also more often or even less often, every two weeks and, rarely, monthly.

In any case, the client is asked to commit to devoting time and energy to the treatment and not to expect abrupt solutions from the psychotherapist.

What is the regulation regarding professional confidentiality?

The professional confidentiality of the Psychologist is established by the law and provides that the psychotherapist must maintain absolute confidentiality for what the client discloses during the session, but also for what they perceive during their interaction with the client. In addition, the psychotherapist is not allowed to videotape, record or otherwise record the session without the client's consent.

An exception to the above rule is the termination of professional confidentiality for safety reasons (safety of the client or third parties). Finally, the psychotherapist is allowed to share, anonymously, information that their clients disclose to them with their clinical supervisor (professional mental health specialist) only if this information contributes to the better conduct of psychotherapy.
